The 1800s for Black Americans was a time of forced servitude, anguish, heartbreak, and strength of faith. John, a wealthy Richmond, Virginia slave owner’s son, and Hannah, the Negro daughter of a protective and loving mother, grew up as playmates, sharing their lives and dreams. Soon a sweet and tumultuous love affair began that grew so strong John would risk everything before relinquishing it. With his reputation in jeopardy, Hannah in his heart, and a father and country firmly against him, John must overcome innumerable obstacles, some involving incredible violence and cruelty. Along the way he discovers shocking family secrets, buried for years. This historic romance raises the question – Can the love between a beautiful, young slave woman and a wealthy Confederate slave master’s son endure the prevailing ideology of their time?

Just discovered this author and I am really loving her writing style.she thinks out side the books. She takes controversial situations and make a compelling love story and tale ... That is remarkable. This story had me emotionally invested. I enjoyed this story, really enjoyed it. It was like watching a movie, I just love her writings her portrayal of the characters through out the book was superb. I have no complaints. John was such an educated and head strong man. He refused to give his love to an other,he was adamant he only wanted his HANNAH... REJOICE...given that time period he stood his ground. Hannah was no push over she handled situations with the passion of a grizzly mama bear. She was VERY outspoken and not a pushover I LOVE IT. Rarely can an author make the female lead not overbearing, but this author so far, from the two books I have read by her the female leads are not annoying or helpless or indecisive. The male least are not overly flashy either. They both stood their ground and I like the way JOHN TALKED ..he was very articulate and compassionate about his LOVE AND HIS beliefs.. Just splendid . I applaud this author she took an very sensitive time era and made it an extraordinary love story. I had to stop at times as my eyes watered, it was so much emotions involve. I was literally bawling my eye balls out. That just shows how good this book is A TRUE MASTERPIECE !!!!!
Another standalone!!! Forgiveness, retribution, love, god, trust... Everything was befitted, the love between these , the love making everything ...... All in one *********
Please read this book I so wholeheartedly recommend. I found a new author to rave about....

While im not really of fan of slaves and masters stories I truly enjoyed this one it had no pretense and it came right at you I loved John jr and Hannah's relationship he loved her from the start the things they both endured to be together and while he loved his father he knew he to be no saint and I was happy when he found his siblings and it seems that they have a relationship down the road very well written book from Tiana
As a pre-teen growing up in the 70's it was not uncommon to walk down to the corner store or local Kmart and easily find romance novels depicting miscegenation in the antebellum south. Their covers were adorned with portraits of a dashing blue-eyed male and his dark Lady Love secluded under the willow trees or maybe down by a deserted lake, always in some modest variation of undress...and always hidden, secret and suggestive of shame.

Most of these books (that I was WAY too young to have in my possession) usually ended in tragedy. The hero crumbles under the pressure of family and society, dark lady love gets sold further south (or worse), some poor soul gets lynched or the slaves were always revolting (Who wouldn't?)

In short, there was no romance in these 'romance' novels but rather they were social commentaries on man's inhumanity to man with interracial sex sandwiched in-between all the despair.

Somewhere towards the end of he decade, after 'Mandingo' horrified us and 'Roots' enlightened us, it seems to me that this genre of literature slowly faded into the realm of politically incorrectness.

Having said that, I guess the title, artwork and subject matter in this day and age is what promted me to purchase this book. Though the cover art is amazingly appealing (no hiding in the bushes here!), I still assumed it to be just another story of woefully star-crossed lovers who's lives would end with ruin just like the ones I'd read as a kid but boy, was I pleasently surprised!

'The Slave Master's Son' is a very beautiful treatment of an absolutely horrible time to be in love with 'the wrong person'.
John is a man of conviction and honor who follows his heart without hesitation or regard for consequence. Hannah is smart, resorceful and brave in the face of adversity. In love with each other from childhood, their story is not just a tale of lust between master and slave but of a friendship from birth, true love lived out in the open and romance that extends far beyond the carnal.

My only regret with is book is that ended where it did. I wanted to know what happened after that last page and next after that. I say a sequel is in order. Encore, Ms. Laveen, Encore!
Another great story by Ms. Laveen! She always takes us into the heart of her characters by the end of the story you feel as though you know these characters inside and out. As usual I was sorry to get to the end of the story. As the reader I'm so invested in the story and feelings of each character of course I don't wanted to end. We learned that when you truly love someone you're willing to endure quite a bit in order to be with that person. Even if it means that love according to the laws of the land is illegal you're willing to break the law to be with that person. The story also had an element of redemption. A selfish father found redemption at the end of his life. And those that he wrong in the past found forgiveness. Like I mentioned before I'm sorry The story came to an end but it was a good end. I totally recommend this book to you.
